ROBERT snapped awake, sitting up in the dark. He touched the form beside him. Jenny was still in his bed. Angelique was snuggled safely in her room, and Jake’s people were still alive. None of these things would last very long unless he acted.

Getting up, he donned a robe and went into the hall, shutting the door quietly behind him. The nightmare fresh in his mind, he paced the hall in thought. If he found a way to save Jake and his people, the King would be angry, possibly angry enough to jail him and sell his possessions—including Jenny and his daughter.

Deep in thought, he rounded a corner. He would have to get those people to safety, and then return to spirit away his family before the King discovered what he had done. That was going to require him to cover vast distances quickly. The casting of such powerful magic would draw too much attention to him. Magic he didn’t have, and if Jenny had any hand in what he was going to do, then she was sure to be beheaded if the King found out.

Jenny could not know what he was doing, for her own safety. If the King’s personal wizards did not discover his activities, then any other wizard who scryed him out would be happy to raise the alarm. Magic was out of the question until he got far away from Heartland.

The answer to his problem was scattered in somewhere in Demoria. He needed his Hellcat to get him where he wanted to go. He would be able to travel undetected by magic, and if anyone did try to stop him, he would have the means to fight back. The only problem was finding his plane.

Robert’s plan began to form as he walked to his study. He didn’t feel any scrying eyes at the moment, but he was sure the King would have him watched. That meant he had to trick them into thinking that he was still in his castle.
